A Comprehensive Historical Record of the WCA History from 1919 to 2014
History of the Wellington Croquet Association Inc.
As researched by Nancy McDonald from Minutes books held at the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington
Edited by Pamela George of the Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club Inc.
This document was constructed from the Minutes of the Wellington Croquet Association compiled in 2011 by Mrs Nancy McDonald and would never have come to fruition without her continuing interest in croquet and her wish to capture the history of it before it is lost. Nancy’s relationship to croquet is stronger than most know as her mother was a first cousin of Arthur Ross who can be claimed as the ‘father’ of modern Association croquet.
The information has been divided into several sections and edited to form a narrative or to construct comparative lists of people and events.
On occasion the extract from the minutes has been duplicated for clarification or to be put in context.
A few items have been added by way of text box from the editor’s 34 year association with croquet at club, regional, national and international levels and knowledge of the game and which in her opinion were omitted when the minutes were written but which form an essential part of the WCA activities. The use of exclamation marks is to highlight the continuing nature of the workings of the Croquet world which have not changed much over the years.
We wish to give a special thank you to Joan Clayton, Music Librarian for the Wellington City Council (Rtd) who transcribed the original handwritten notes into a word document and to Deirdre Wogan, Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club Inc. who helped with the proof reading.
The editor accepts full responsibility for the manner of presentation of the document.
Pamela George (formerly Fellows) Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club Inc.
